Deer

Counting the number of deer over the Quantock Hills.

Male red deer called a stag

The red deer is an iconic animal, closely associated with the Quantock Hills. The largest native UK land mammal, with males weighing between 90kg and 190kg, and standing around 1.07 to 1.37 at the shoulder, these impressive animals can be seen throughout the Quantock Hills.

We work with the Quantock Deer Management & Conservation Group to undertake an annual count of deer across the Quantock Hills. This provides a minimum herd size as well as showing the number of males, females and young. The deer count also identifies other species, such as roe deer, allowing us to understand how deer use the landscape and better manage their impacts to ensure a continued healthly population.
