Information Collection

You can visit our site and use many of the services without telling us who you are or giving us any personally identifiable information.  This website uses cookies in very specific ways that are intended to help you, the user. A cookie is a small file that a web site saves on your computer to help personalise your visit. On this web site a cookie may be used on some ‘interactive’ pages, such an online form or consultation, to provide additional functionality or when it is necessary to maintain a unique ‘ID’ on your browser whilst you use those pages.  It is only when you complete a form that requests personal information or email Somerset Council that you can be identified. When completing forms you may be asked for a variety of personal information such as name, address and post code.  Somerset Council automatically records all website activity in logs on each web server. These logs are used to assess which pages are the most popular. No personal identifying information is stored in these logs and IP addresses are not linked back to any individual.

This site uses cookies. That is because we use Google Analytics, a popular web analytics service which uses cookies to help us to count the number of people that visit our site and to analyse how they use it (e.g. we can determine which pages on our site are the most popular ones).

Information use

Where you voluntarily choose to give us your personal details the personal data you give Somerset Council will be used exclusively for providing you with the information or service you have requested.  We do not knowingly store any personal information about any users of this website, except for when they complete an online form, consultation or other online service with their personal details. When booking onto an event via our website we retain name, telephone number and email address. We retain this information to allow us to communicate information about that event to you, including if we need to make last minute changes to venue / time etc. The information is deleted after the event.  On these occasions, the user will be aware that the details they are providing will be submitted to one of Somerset Council’s employees and/or stored in a database.  We do not sell, rent or trade any personally identifiable information you provide when using this website.

While we strive to keep the information that you supply secure, please be aware that the Internet is not a fully secure medium. We use secure servers for collecting sensitive information.  For further information on Data Protection, please refer to the Government web site to review full details on the Data Protection Act 2018.  Freedom of Information The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives you a general right to all types of recorded information held by public authorities. The Act is designed to ensure greater accountability, as well as to promote a more open culture.  Somerset Council recognises the importance of the Freedom of Information Act for public services and we are committed to meeting our responsibilities under it.
