Bats

Surveying the distribution and abundance of the only true flying mammal.

Volunteers with bat detectors listening for bats

The team has been monitoring bats on the Quantock Hills since 2013, to better understand their distribution and what species call the Quantock Hills home. Like many animals bat numbers have declined drastically in the last 70 years.

Bats are small flying mammals and there are 17 species that breed in the UK, all of which feed on insects.

By monitoring bats we are better able to understand whether land management works are having a poisitive impact on popuations. Monitoring is undertaken from June to September with analysis undertaken over the autumn and winter. If you are interested in bat monitoring please contact the team.
