Discovering stories of bird migration from Africa to the Quantock Hills National Landscape at a series of Quantock Nature Calling workshops which took place during the summer of 2025.

The Quantock Hills National Landscape and Somerset Art Works introduced a new project offering a series of creative workshops for AfriQuan groups and communities (African families living around the Quantock Hills National Landscape). Part of a national arts initiative facilitated by Activate Performing Arts, produced by the National Landscape Association with funding from Arts Council England.

Creative activities were led by artist Luan MacDonald and there were opportunities to experience nature and explore collective cultural and historical perspectives. Taking place on the Quantock Hills at National Trust Coleridge Cottage, and trips to other cultural venues, over the course of six months the groups investigated the myths and legends of migratory birds, such as Nightjars, Pied Flycatchers and Swallows, and their significance in the Quantock ecosystem.

Developed for African communities living around the Quantock Hills in Somerset, these free sessions were open to anyone interested in connecting with the cultural experience and learning from one another during the creative processes. Participants were welcome to attend as many sessions as they liked, with no experience is necessary. The themed sessions included:

  • 14th May - Introduction & printmaking

  • 25th June - Textile art

  • 16th July  - Myths & legends

  • 27th August - Family day

  • 24th September - Somerset Art Weeks visit (Wellington Old Brick Workshop) & workshop

  • 15th October - Sharing and celebration

What did the participants experience?‘

I am excited to be part of the Quantock Nature Calling Project as it’s a unique opportunity to explore and look at the Quantocks from different perspectives whilst celebrating both Somerset and African culture. Through sharing and learning, we can create new dialogues and ways of seeing; building a deeper understanding of migratory birds and their impact and influence, here and beyond the Quantocks.’ -  Artist Luan MacDonald
