Patrick Watts – Mabbott from Exmoor National Park led the walk through woodland and across old hillside pastures introducing participants to the amazing array of fungi to be found on this environmentally-friendly farm.

On a beautiful moonlit night many people enjoyed a wonderful walk over the Quantock Hills whilst raising money for a very worthwhile cause – the Albemarle Centre.

As the Red Deer rutting season has progressed, my own observations seem to suggest that this season has been a little hit and miss as to how vocal and showy they are being.

Andy has been busy taking people out to witness the annual deer rut … one of the most exciting wildlife events in the Quantock calendar. It is important to remember that the deer can be pretty evident at this time of year and therefore more vulnerable to less respectful attention.

Following on from my previous blog about flytipping, I am delighted to report that three men from Wellington were successfully prosecuted for fly tipping on the Quantock Hills.

One of the most rewarding parts of the Ranger’s job is to lead guided walks and on Saturday I had the pleasure of walking the ridge from Lydeard Hill to Holford with fourteen members of the public as we discussed how the hills are managed and kept an eye open for wildlife.

The AONB Volunteers spend a great deal of time helping me with wildlife surveys of one kind or another. This year they helped with several bird surveys and I’m just getting round to sorting the data out.

The SDF for 20011/12 has £45,000 to allocate. This will provide grants to organisations, businesses, community groups and individuals who wish to explore and develop practical projects that enhance, conserve and develop the environment, economy and way of life.
Ticks are becoming more common and a bite from this spider-like parasite could lead to Lyme Disease. This is a treatable infection caused by bacterium transmitted by ticks when they bite. Not every tick carries Lyme Disease and it is important to realise that the disease is relatively rare.
