Quantock Parishes

  • The Quantock Hills map.

In Saxon times (maybe even earlier) the Quantock Hills were divided into 14 parishes. They tried to share the land fairly, so that each parish had some woods, some common, some land for growing crops and some for grazing.

  • The Parish of Over Stowey.

In each parish there is usually one main village settlement, containing the parish church. The whole parish is named after this village. Many local things are still organised and decided at a parish level
