Quantock Dragon

  • Good morning Dora, what a baa-aaa-eautiful day.

  • Nice and quiet up here today, Barbara, just right for a graze and a natter, and a good backscratch against this post.

  • Morning All!

  • Oh it’s Bill. What are you doing at ground level? Aren’t you feeling well?

  • I’m fine, thanks. It’s my day off. I’m having a rest. Or I was! Until you two disturbed me.. Didn’t you know this is my favourite perching post?

  • Morning ladiesssss Mind if I join you for a sssstretch in the ssssun? Oh Hallo Bill, not out chasing up any storiessss then?

  • Not today, it’s my day off.

  • Lovely day! Lovely day! Lots of flies! For me to catch! You coming for a fly, Bill?

  • It’s Bill’s day off, Piper.

  • Deirdre dormouse, is that you hiding in the leaves. You can come out…Adam’s sunbathing and Bill’s not in a hunting mood. He’s not even hunting for stories.

  • It’s my day off, Deirdre. Even Ace Reporters have a day off!

  • Oh, well, if you’re sure.I won’t be in the way...thank you.

  • Well hallo, it’s William Woodant and co. And before you ask,Yes it’s my day off and No, I’m not chasing stories!!

  • I’m not William, I’m Wilma, and I’ve got a story
I’m not William, I’m Warren and I’ve got a story
I’m not William, I’m Wendy, and I’ve got a story
I’m not William, I’m Wilfred, and I’ve got a story
I’m not William, I’m Walter, and I’ve got a story

  • Many ants, one story.

  • A Ssstory. Go on Woodants, tell usss.

  • We‘ve got eyes everywhere.

  • and we tell each other everything.

  • We never forget a story.

  • Many ant-lives ago,

  • so we’ve heard,

  • a strange beast lived in the woods.

  • It terrified the bigger creatures!

  • Even the humans!

  • they called it

  • the Gert Wurm!

  • The Quantock Dragon!

  • The woodcutters stayed out of the woods.

  • But we Woodants were too small to notice

  • So we were safe.

  • We’ve got a story like this too. A terrible creature. Much swifter than a deer!

  • I’ve heard that too, a baa-baa-big flying thing. Much worse than a baa-baa-buzzard!

  • Buzzards can be bad enough.

  • Only when we’re hungry, Deirdre, a chap’s got to eat. Go on Barbara, about the super buzzards

  • …and they swooped down and caught Quantock sheep in their claws and ate them!! A baa-baa-bad time!

  • …and Quantock deer and Quantock ponies, till they were nearly all gone!!

  • I heard they were covered in scales..

  • Yesss. Scaly like usss snakessss, but much bigger, with legs and wings!

  • And they could breathe fire – they burnt up the trees!

  • And when they lay down

  • to rest

  • in their nests

  • in the woods,

  • they looked

  • just like

  • tree trunks

  • Ridiculous! I think these are just made-up old stories. What’s the evidence? None of you has actually seen one of these things for yourself!

  • Excuse me, excuse me, can I say something!

  • You’re only a dormoussssse, Deirdre, A sleepy dormousssse won’t have anything to say about dragonssss!

  • Ta-a-ake no notice of the snake, you say what you want to, Deirdre.

  • I have, Bill, I’ve seen the dragon!

  • ?????!!!!!!

  • Yes I have. I got inside one of the churches by mistake, I think I must have got mixed up with the harvest festival, and there it was, carved into one of the seat-ends. Horrible it was, two heads, scales, wings, just like you said, a dragon, gobbling up a wood cutter! So it must be true!

  • How scary! What a brave little dormouse you are! But, Deirdre, it was only a picture!

  • Well, I’ve never seen one of these Quantock Wormy Dragon things, or even heard of them, and us Buzzards have been reporting on the Quantocks for thousands of years. And we Ace Reporters never miss a thing! It can’t be true!

  • But Bill, like you’ve been telling us, even Ace Reporters take the occasional day off!

  • Piper’sss got you there, Bill!

  • Humph. Well ruffle my feathers, Piper, I suppose you’ve got a point. And it is a good story, almost a scoop. Yes. ‘Bill Buzzard, his friends, and the Quantock Dragon, Fact or Fiction’ Let the readers decide for themselves I like it.!
Well, Cheerio all, can’t hang around all day, I’m off, I’ve got work to do!
