- Remembrance Service on Cothelstone Hill

Posted by Andy Harris on 14 November 2011

Let us not forget. Last Friday was Armistice Day and the AONB Service was very pleased to assist 40 Commando Royal Marines to put on a Remembrance Service on Cothelstone Hill.

The entire camp of several hundred marines marched from their base in Norton Fitzwarren to Cothelstone Hill and were greeted by families and VIP’s who all took part in an open air service in the lee of the Seven Sisters.  Our job was to ensure the Exmoor Ponies remained calm and out of the way and this was achieved with a bit of food bribery in the form of pony nuts.

Although it was a bit windy, just as the service got underway the sun came out and the service went extremely well with the two minute silence being marked by the firing of a 105mm light gun.  The final act of remembrance was a fly past by two helicopters.

It was a very humbling experience and one the AONB Service was glad to assist with.

Ticks are becoming more common and a bite from this spider-like parasite could lead to Lyme Disease. This is a treatable infection caused by bacterium transmitted by ticks when they bite. Not every tick carries Lyme Disease and it is important to realise that the disease is relatively rare.
